3RD GRADE PET DAY 2014
November 14th was a chilly day outside, but that did not stop Pickaway Third Graders from enjoying the end of the day with some special guests-their pets! Every fall Mrs. Bohrer and Ms. Conrad's Classes invite parents, grandparents or friends to bring the family pet, or sometimes pets, to school. They meet their third grader on the southern end of the school yard. The kids get a chance to introduce a pet whether theirs is in attendance or not. In Social Studies students learn about decision making and economics relating goods and services, producers and consumers to things we buy and use to care for our animal friends. After each student tells about a pet, they get a paper ribbon made using specialized labor. This activity lets students experience the difference between the work of a "craftsman" and an assembly line. The entire class can turn out a ribbon for each class member, 17, in less time an individual can make two. It's a fun unit with a special treat at the end, getting the chance to see the pets we write about, talk about, live with and love. Click here for additional pictures of the event
4TH GRADE STEM CLUB
This year the fourth graders have a new opportunity at Pickaway Elementary. Once a month they are all invited to stay after school for the Fourth Grade STEM Club. This group of young scientists spends time creating and exploring the world around them through Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math concepts. The first STEM club meeting involved designing a roller coaster while looking for examples of potential and kinetic energy. The students looked at things like slope and height to build a coaster that included at least one loop. In October the students worked in small groups to build catapults. They were then taken to the gym to test their creations. Future STEM Club topics involve building windmills, designing speedboats, and creating a water filtration system. The club is a great after school activity to encourage students to look at the world scientifically and to use the design process to solve problems. Click here for additional pictures
